Instituto Intercultural del Caribe (IIC), an institute of adult education, is the Spanish Department of the German-Dominican Language and Culture Institute EDASE. The Institute, founded in 1994, is dedicated to teaching Spanish as a foreign language and providing intercultural understanding through language courses, immersion trainings and study abroad programs. Located in the same building, Dominican and Haitian students learn German and English at IIC’s sister school, Casa Goethe, with the goal of creating better future opportunities for themselves and their communities. IIC is a privately owned and independent enterprise under German management. The staff is composed of Dominicans and Europeans. The school has close connections to local institutions in the field of culture, education, and tourism. IIC follows the guidance of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (A1 to C2). Its Spanish courses are accredited in the United States by Seton Hill University www.setonhill.edu for university credits and in Germany by several states for the so-called “Bildungsurlaub” (educational leave for professionals).
